Playbook Part 3.1 – Roles & Archetypes: Goalkeepers

Structure, Style, Strategy – the LiberoUno way

Foreword

This next series of posts will break down how I bring it to life through the use of player roles and archetypes. This is the foundation for how I build and structure teams in Football Manager.

Rather than forcing players into a pre-built tactical shape, I define clear archetypes for each position — outlining the traits and responsibilities I’m looking for — and then select roles and duties that reflect those qualities in-game.

It’s also worth noting:
I don’t use individual player instructions.
I believe that if the right player is placed in the right role, they’ll carry out what’s expected naturally. And if they bring any added qualities beyond the role’s core expectations, those will emerge without needing to force it.

Shot Stopper

This is the default goalkeeper archetype I use in most of my saves.

I expect them to handle all the fundamental responsibilities of the role: saving shots, claiming crosses, commanding the area — but nothing more. I don’t want them trying to play out from the back under pressure or rushing out needlessly.

When it comes to distribution and movement, I ask them to keep things simple and stick to their core strengths.

  • High profile examples include: Courtois, Maignan & Donnarumma

Sweeper Keeper

While many managers in FM lean towards this role as standard, I take a more selective approach.

I only use a Sweeper Keeper when I have a goalkeeper who is genuinely capable of playing the role — someone comfortable with stepping out of goal, reading the game quickly, and contributing to build-up with intelligent distribution.

This role adds risk, so I won’t use it unless I’m confident the keeper can handle it. Otherwise, I’d rather they focus on the fundamentals.

  • High profile examples include: ter Stegen, Sommer & Ederson

Next Up…

In Part 3.2, I’ll move on to the Defenders — outlining the different roles I use across the back line, how I identify key traits, and how each fits into the overall tactical structure.
